[UPDATE: Paani remained open this week after announcing it would close. No formal statement was made about the reversal, though a family member indicated on social media that the restaurant was authorized to continue operations during lease negotiations.]
A beloved, locally-owned Sudbury restaurant will host its final dinner service today, Monday, October 7.
Paani Indian Cuisine owner, Vimi Verma, announced the closure on the restaurant’s Facebook page:
“I have been a resident of Sudbury for 40 years; my children still live in this town, as do my grandchildren. With such deep ties to the community, I knew it was the perfect place to establish our family business. It had been a dream of mine to open an Indian restaurant, and in 2009 that dream was realized as Paani became the FIRST Indian restaurant in Sudbury. Even today, it remains the only woman-owned Indian restaurant in Massachusetts.
For the past 15 years, it has been the honor of my life to serve this community through Paani. Through difficult and uncertain times, like the Covid pandemic and the loss of my husband, your unwavering support gave me purpose. Thank you for embracing Paani and allowing us to celebrate countless birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, weddings, holidays, date nights and family dinners. Each occasion holds a special place in my heart.
Although this chapter is closed, it is not the end of our story. Continue to follow our page to stay up-to-date on our next venture.”
Vimi Verma – Owner, Paani Indian Cuisine
The restaurant had a reputation for consistently excellent food and warm, friendly service. Most ratings and reviews sites gave Paani four-star and five-star reviews – a track record that the restaurant sustained for over a decade. The restaurant moved into the Meadow Walk development on Boston Post Road in 2019 after years of operation just down the street.
Verma’s hint at a new venture will surely take the edge off the disappointment for many loyal customers, though no additional details were provided.
