[Opinion submission from the Sudbury Democratic Town Committee]
The Sudbury Democratic Town Committee is inviting Sudbury residents to stand outside the ICE Enforcement & Removal Operations Office in Burlington every Wednesday from 11am-1pm.
WHEN: Every Wednesday from 11am-1pm
WHERE: ICE Enforcement & Removal Operations Office (1000 District Avenue, Burlington MA 01803)
Housed inside an otherwise unassuming office building adjacent to the Burlington Mall, the ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Office has become an abysmal and unsanitary holding facility for detainees. Marcelo Gomes da Silva, the 18-year-old high school student arrested by ICE on his way to volleyball practice, was held there for days, and has described sleeping on a cement floor, receiving only crackers for meals, and sharing one open toilet with 40 men.
The protests started with a single local couple, and have since grown into the hundreds, as more and more individuals and groups have joined. Recent guest speakers have included Congressman Seth Moulton and Senator Ed Markey.
If what ICE is doing in Burlington is counter to your values, we call on you to join the weekly standouts to show support for the detainees, express your opposition to ICE’s cruelty, and simply bear witness. Regardless of your views on any other political issues, if you support immigrants and their constitutional rights and are committed to nonviolence you are welcome to join.
