Artists Molly Gallentine and James Leonard have created a real-life liminal space inside a 19th century barn in Sudbury, Massachusetts. The T-Shirt Shop at the End of Civilization allows visitors to freely navigate the three-story barn, taking their own Fool’s Journey.
A rainbow of criss-crossing lines redefines the space. Brightly colored garments, rescued from the waste stream and collaged with texts hang throughout. Ghostly vignettes of found objects, including a mountain of mirrors and naked mannequins, haunt.
The artwork invites viewers to contemplate what happens when we explode the psychological space of our media feeds into real-space. Where does society end and the self begin? What is civilization and why be civilized? Where, if anywhere, do we go from here?
A series of three events add one more layer of otherworldly experiences to this liminal space. Come see an aerialist rise on 20’ silks through the vortex at the heart of the piece. Hear a science fiction author describe imagined life beyond the apocalypse. Participate in a long table dinner for 40 under the installation in an act of spontaneous community.

Space is limited and reservations are required. Events run September 13 through September 20. All events are free and open to the public. Donations are accepted.
Molly Gallentine is an award winning non-fiction writer, vocalist, and event planner from Jersey City, NJ. James Leonard is an internationally exhibited visual artist and dancer from Brooklyn, NY. The duo have been working together for over 10 years. Their prior works have appeared in publications including Hyperallergic, Brooklyn Magazine, and Smithsonian.
