(Sudbury, MA, August 19, 2024) Honoring the attainment of women’s suffrage, Governor Maura Healey acknowledges August 26, 2024 as Women’s Equality Day.
In 1973 Congress designated August 26, the date the Nineteenth Amendment was certified, as National Women’s Equality Day. Now Massachusetts Governor Healey urges “all residents of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.”
Prior to passage of the Nineteenth Amendment countless women and some men of all heritages labored for generation after generation, enduring resistance and persecution for doing so, before finally securing women’s right to vote.
When women’s suffrage passed it opened the door to removing barriers to opportunities for women as equal citizens in the Commonwealth and the country. In the century since 1920 women have gained entry to participation in civic governance and in the economy. Women have contributed to advancements and innovations in science, the arts, and all areas of human endeavor. They have done all this as they have continued their roles in their families and communities.
Full parity with women’s male counterparts remains to be accomplished, yet on August 26, Massachusetts honors the past and present work done by so many advocates to take women closer to that goal.
