Having lived in Sudbury for sixty years and attended most Town Meetings, I’m appalled at what I witnessed at our Special Town Meeting. I could not believe the booing, the disruption and the nastiness that was shown by some Sudbury citizens attending the meeting. I felt for our Moderator who tried to control the meeting to no avail.
Just what exactly are we teaching our children? To be as rude and insulting as they were? I don’t think the elementary school committee was on trial here. But a good many citizens were!
The March Town election seems to have been the impetus for this behavior. There was misinformation, insinuations and charges of fraud circulated. No better way to get rumors started. The Sudbury Special town Meeting was a result of this.
A “no confidence” vote in the Sudbury elementary school committee was submitted without any specifics given as to why such a vote. Amendments to the recall article were made and lost but the main motion was never debated. And, there was a real cost involved in holding this meeting.
Hopefully, the next Town Meeting will be more civil as it has been in the past. We’re lucky to have people who volunteer their time and energy to make Sudbury a leader in the cultural values badly needed.
