As Sudbury approaches its upcoming Annual Town Election on Monday, March 31, we have a critical opportunity to choose leaders who will shape our town’s future with vision, integrity, and a commitment to delivering results. Local leadership isn’t about riding the coattails of others or misleading the community with falsehoods — it’s about rolling up your sleeves, showing up, and making thoughtful, transparent decisions for the good of all residents. Today, I am proud to endorse two outstanding candidates, Lisa Kouchakdjian and Radha Gargeya, for the Select Board. They embody the hands-on, committed leadership Sudbury needs to move forward.
A Vision for a Resilient, Forward-Thinking Sudbury
In evaluating candidates for the Select Board, we must consider what truly makes for effective leadership. The qualities to look for include:
1. Strong Leadership and Dedication:
Effective leadership isn’t just about supporting popular projects — it’s about engaging with residents, tackling tough issues, and doing the behind-the-scenes work that keeps our town running. Lisa and Radha have proven they don’t shy away from complex challenges. They’ve been present, active, and deeply invested in moving projects like the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail forward, while balancing the needs of public safety, infrastructure, and environmental sustainability.
2. Transparency and Service:
Open communication and honesty build trust. Lisa’s years of service on the Select Board and SPS School Committee — including leading through the COVID crisis — demonstrate her dedication to clear, fact-based decision-making. Radha’s 12 years on the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School Committee show his commitment to listening to all voices, thoughtfully weighing options, and making decisions with integrity.
3. Institutional Knowledge:
Experience matters when it comes to navigating town government. Lisa’s ongoing service on the Select Board, coupled with her school committee experience, provides invaluable knowledge that helps build on past successes while guiding the town through future decisions. Radha’s deep roots in community service and regional school finance add another layer of insight, ensuring the Select Board remains proactive and informed. Their in-depth answers at the LWV Candidates’ Forum and in Sudbury Weekly differentiated them on both style and substance.
4. Broad, Complex Responsibilities:
The Select Board’s work spans public safety, infrastructure, budgeting, environmental stewardship, and more. Both Lisa and Radha have shown they can balance diverse priorities without losing sight of long-term goals. Their leadership has helped shape projects that enhance recreational spaces, preserve natural areas, and promote Sudbury’s long-term well-being.
5. Respectful, Inclusive Community Engagement:
Leadership is about bringing people together — not dividing them. Lisa and Radha have consistently fostered an environment where every voice matters. They are committed to making Sudbury a welcoming community for people of all backgrounds, ensuring decisions are made with empathy, equity, and respect for diverse perspectives.
6. Long-Term Planning and Fiscal Sustainability:
Good governance requires balancing immediate needs with future growth. Lisa and Radha understand that strategic investments — not short-sighted cuts or empty promises — are what will keep Sudbury thriving. Their collaborative work with town management reflects a thoughtful approach to budgeting that safeguards both our present and future.
7. Clarity, Honesty, and Real Solutions:
Sudbury deserves leaders who present real solutions, not vague promises or divisive rhetoric. Lisa and Radha have consistently shared clear, actionable plans for everything from sustainable development to expanding recreational opportunities. They lead with honesty. Residents can trust their words align with their actions.
Why Your Vote Matters:
The decisions made by the Select Board impact every aspect of life in Sudbury — from the safety of our streets to the preservation of our green spaces. By electing leaders who work hard, act with integrity, and stay focused on what’s best for the community, we invest in a future where Sudbury continues to grow and thrive.
