As I have observed the candidates for the many Boards and Committees, I have noticed a difference in the types of candidates running.
One; there appears to be a group effort to normalize misinformation, to make it appear our community is run by the likes of Nosferatu.
These individuals have produced negative campaigns cloaked in concern for the ‘taxpayer’. I find this approach unhelpful and nonproductive. I also find the lack of solutions other than the criticism of past leadership, and a rollout of misinformed assumptions tiresome. I have been involved in the Town for many years, and by ‘involved’ I mean I have paid close attention to what happens inside the function of government and as a citizen. The ‘we need change’ barrage is reminiscent of a time where Sudbury leadership fell far short of expectations that diminished our community (read, people having open, honest discussions). That was not so long ago. Our leadership was in poor shape, our management was operated with no knowledge of Municipal Finance, or leadership. It was full of unpleasant innuendo and infighting. We got nowhere. We were divided. We need to fix that because as a community, we deserve better than that.
Two: Sudbury now has an opportunity to come together to develop a cohesive fair minded leadership representation which would produce excellent educational decisions, fact based financial modeling that impacts in a positive way, future decisions relative to our Capital and budgetary challenges as well as a renewed commitment to our environment.
We have opportunities around Sustainability, Water Resource Protection, while projecting future success for Economic possibilities brought on by the Rail/Trails and discussions about the Route 20 business corridor.
I am looking for those who want to have those serious discussions about solutions. I strongly believe our leadership needs to work to build trust and openness in the community. One of our strongest resources is our people. The diversity of thought should be celebrated, not berated. Our volunteer corps should be encouraged to grow their investment in our community while bringing a vast intellectual resource to decision making.
Having a close, well-run community fosters a sense of belonging and cooperation among its residents. We will thrive if we commit to effective communication, mutual respect and a shared vision for our future. This can lead to a more harmonious and supportive environment for us all.
My vote will go to those who meet (in my opinion) those criteria.
