Users groups will begin moving into the Fairbank Community Center next week. The building is going to close on the December 11 and remain closed until early in the new year. On Wednesday, the Permanent Building Committee met to get an update, and the Owner’s Project Manager shared some recent pictures of the building:
Here’s the latest view of the gym, which is looking rather dapper:
Here’s the Senior Center electric fireplace that was funded by the Friends of Sudbury Senior Citizens, and it’s looking mighty cozy:
And here’s the multipurpose room, looking very multi-purposeful:
Finally, here’s one of the program rooms, yearning for its first program:
Much of the discussion in the Permanent Building Committee was, once again, focused on information technology and audio/visual installation and the exterior barn door that covers the overhead door in the gym. (0:18:00) To recap, nobody cares about the inner beauty of the overhead door, and they want to cover it up with the bougiest storm door this side of the Mississippi.
The door is to be made out of cedar, which they already purchased, and will weigh about 1,500 pounds. It was described as purely aesthetic. During the meeting, the PBC had to decide whether to keep or cut the barn door. The vote was split at 3-2 in favor of keeping it. Part of the difficulty in making a decision was the amount of money that has already been spent on the door. Those sunk costs are hard to walk away from, and since they already bought the wood, they’d have to pay to store it somewhere.
Other complicating factors for the barn door included the drainage problems on the property. They confirmed that the construction has been done in accordance with the designs, so now they need to design a solution to manage the water. Some felt it would be best to sort that out before proceeding with the door.
Nevertheless, they voted to proceed with the barn door. Timing for installation isn’t certain, but the overhead door’s days in the sun seem numbered; soon to be banished to eternal darkness, living in the shadow of a cedar giant. Fare thee well, humble overhead door.
