Two rail trails are being built in Sudbury. Both remain active construction sites, but that hasn’t stopped literally anyone some eager trail users from enjoying a walk or ride down these scenic corridors. The Bruce Freeman Rail Trail is further along than the Mass Central Rail Trail, and even has a base course of asphalt down which likely makes it the more enticing trespassing option for trail seekers.
Traversing the Mass Central Rail Trail in its current condition is a bit more conspicuous, and risky for the public. It’s also strongly discouraged by the Town.
Eversource is engaged in extensive construction work throughout the corridor, including installation of the underground transmission line itself. Unless parkouring through an electricity substation where construction workers are trying to operate heavy machinery is your idea of a good time, it’s best to trespass on the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail instead find other places to exercise.
Fortunately, there are weekly “environmental compliance” packages that provide photographs of various aspects of the project, giving a bit of a glimpse into what it may look like when the rail trail is eventually built atop the underground transmission lines. In this update, we’ll focus on the bridges. All the pictures below are from the environmental compliance packages that are published on the Town of Sudbury website here. Construction is ongoing, and these pictures were labeled as being taken on various days throughout the month of May.
