At the October 29 meeting of the Sudbury Permanent Building Committee, the Town’s Combined Facility Director, Sandra Duran, informed the committee that the cost estimate for the fully-designed pool renovation exceeded the funds available:
“We’ve got a 100% design document and after that design document we’ve received a cost estimate. That cost estimate exceeds the amount of funding that we have available. So we’ve been going through a process by which we’re trying to understand the drawings and look for ways to optimize our funding and optimize the design. And as we look at that, there are some funding challenges.”

According to Duran, Town is undergoing a value engineering process to try to get the project within budget. They are also exploring alternative funding sources, including evaluating if any remaining funds from the Fairbank Community Center project can be repurposed for the pool renovation. Duran felt the pool work was an extension of the community center project, and speculated that it may have been value engineered out. (Duran was not in her post in Sudbury when the community center was designed.)
While the renovation is primarily focused on the interior, the pool roof replacement project has gone out to bid, and the bids are due later this month. Duran emphasized that it will be a solar-ready roof and is being planned in concert with the solar installation on the rest of the community center roof.
The timeline for the pool renovation remains uncertain as the Town works through the design and budget challenges. However, Duran added that the scope of the project is large enough that the Town is required to engage an Owners Project Manager (OPM). She was hoping to engage the same OPM that oversaw the construction of the Fairbank Community Center, as they are already intimately familiar with the facility.
