Town Manager Andy Sheehan announced on Tuesday, January 14 that Assistant Fire Chief Timothy Choate will be promoted to serve as Sudbury’s next Fire Chief. Choate will take the reins of the department from Chief John Whalen upon his retirement.
Choate has served in the Sudbury Fire Department for over 30 years, and is a third-generation firefighter. He is already credentialed as a Fire Chief in Massachusetts. He also has a Master’s Degree of Public Administration in Fire Services Administration, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science/Fire-fighting. Choate is also a District 14 Fire EMS Mobilization Task Force Coordinator.
With the selection of an internal candidate for the post, the Town preserves a level continuity in the fire department. That’s fortunate for Sudbury, as towns across Massachusetts have reported difficulty recruiting firefighters in recent years. Choate’s profile in one fire engineering community page states that he is a “Firm believer that this is the best job in the world.”
