“This move secures our future.”
John Thomas, Executive Director, Sudbury Community Food Pantry
After 35 years of serving MetroWest families in need, the Sudbury Community Food Pantry (SCFP) has announced the purchase of its first permanent home at 534 Boston Post Road in Wayland, a significant step forward for the volunteer-powered organization that has become a regional lifeline.
Founded in 1990 to address local hunger in Sudbury, the Pantry has since grown to serve residents from more than 85 cities and towns, distributing over 30,000 bags of food annually through nearly 6,000 client visits. Until now, it operated out of shared space at Ascension Parish in Sudbury. The new facility—a 3,250-square-foot building on 1.05 acres—represents the Pantry’s first fully owned home and a dramatic expansion of its ability to serve.
“This move secures our future,” said John Thomas, Executive Director of SCFP. “It gives us the ability to streamline our operations, treat our clients with the dignity they deserve, and respond to growing community need with greater speed and care.”

The building, currently under renovation, will feature ADA-compliant upgrades, a new roof and façade, and an interior designed to support client choice and improve volunteer workflow. Renovations were informed by site visits to peer organizations and a focus on improving both the client experience and operational efficiency.
The purchase was made possible without taking on a mortgage thanks to a major donation from a local philanthropist and a network of pro bono support from area professionals and businesses. This debt-free model will allow SCFP to devote even more of its resources directly to food and services.
The Pantry plans to move operations to the new building by mid-August 2025, with service continuing uninterrupted at its current location until then.
With a volunteer base of more than 175 people, SCFP operates on a foundation of community commitment, dignity, and compassion. As food insecurity continues to rise across Massachusetts, the Pantry’s new facility is poised to become a hub for healthy food access, public awareness, and inclusive support for anyone in need—no geographic or demographic restrictions apply.
