Sudbury Weekly has previously reported on the “State of the Sudbury Food Scene,” but what about just… burgers?
As it turns out, Sudbury doesn’t have as many full-service restaurants with burgers on the menu as you might expect. In fact, we could only find four full-service destinations with burgers. What Sudbury lacks in burger destinations, it makes up for with burger varieties available. Here’s what you need to know when you’re craving a burger in Sudbury.
Quick Service Options
Mooyah
We can’t write an article about burgers without mentioning Mooyah in Meadow Walk plaza on Boston Post Road. This quick-service destination specializes in highly-customizable burgers, including turkey burgers and veggie burgers. With gluten-free options available and convenient online ordering, Mooyah is arguably the best option for most anyone in Sudbury looking for a burger in a hurry.
CJ’s Gourmet Pizza and Grill
This one might come as a surprise to those who frequent CJ’s for pizza and subs… but they have four inventive burgers on their menu, including the “Cowboy Burger,” “Fire House Burger” and a veggie burger, too. CJ’s is unique in Sudbury’s burger scene, which is largely found in restaurants on Boston Post Road. Unlike the others, CJ’s is in Sudbury’s historic Town Center, at 29 Hudson Road.
Sudbury Pizza Place
Generations of Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School students can’t be wrong, can they? No, this iconic joint doesn’t have a burger on their menu… but they have cheeseburger sub that has dutifully served as simple, local comfort food for decades. That’s a simple twist on a all-American classic, and certainly worth a try.
Wayside Pizza
Another potential surprise here from a Sudbury pizza joint. Relative newcomer, Wayside Pizza, has a cheeseburger on the menu, and they even offer a cheeseburger dinner that comes with a fries and a side salad for just $15. Considering ground beef prices are surging across the country, that’s quite the bargain.
Franco’s Trattoria
Much like Sudbury Pizza Place, Franco’s is a Sudbury go-to for lunch and dinner. They offer a cheeseburger sub with fries, for $13.95. They also have something most pizza places don’t have: an adjacent sister-store (Franco’s Craft Beer and Wine) selling… beer and wine.
Rossini’s Pizzeria and Restaurant
We struggled to classify Rossini’s as a quick-service restaurant with a more upscale dine-in experience, or dine-in restaurant with a larger takeout operation. Labels aside, they have four burgers on the menu, including a salmon burger. That may just be the only salmon burger available in Sudbury.
Full-Service Burgers
Oak Barrel Tavern
A relative newcomer in Sudbury, but certainly a staple, Oak Barrel Tavern has several burgers to choose from including two “prime” burgers, a veggie burger and a turkey burger. With one of the largest bars in Sudbury, it’s a great destination for a casual lunch or dinner with friends.
The Wayside Inn
There’s no institution in Sudbury that’s more iconic than the Wayside Inn, and they have you covered at lunch time with their “Tavern Burger.” It’s served with fries, and you can opt for a meatless black bean patty if you prefer. All burgers arrive draped in history, with a side of yesteryear. Just remember — the burger is on the lunch menu, but not the dinner menu. (And that’s just fine, since the Prime Rib dinner is the best deal this side of the Mississippi river.)

Sudbury Point Grill
Few restaurants in Sudbury change names and ownership as frequently but maintain their status as a go-to establishment. Before it was Sudbury Point Grill it was Conrad’s, and who can forget the bargain-priced chicken wings when it was Sky Restaurant? Today, Sudbury Point Grill offers six burgers, including a Brazilian style burger with bacon and a fried egg. Turkey and veggie burgers are also available, along with a good, old-fashioned cheeseburger. At Sudbury Point Grill, you can enjoy your burger with live music in the background, at a table or in the bar.
The Farmer’s Daughter
Do you like to know where your beef comes from? The Farmer’s Daughter in the Meadow Walk Plaza has you covered. Their menu features a “Smashed Farm Burger” with beef from Featherbrook Farm. As is always the case at Sudbury’s constantly-buzzing breakfast and lunch destination, the focus on fresh, high-quality ingredients is evident. In addition to the beef burger, diners have the option to choose a veggie burger. Both are served with Cabot cheddar, lettuce, pickled red onions, a spicy aioli and assembled neatly inside a bolo bun.
The Best Burger In Sudbury
It’s difficult to crown any burger the “best in Sudbury,” if only because the options and destinations are so thoroughly differentiated.
Your best bet is to choose your destination — whether it be a local dive, a takeout dinner, a modern farmhouse aesthetic, or a historic property. And why not try them all?
Okay… with the price of beef skyrocketing, maybe you’ll have to pace yourself. But each destination is worth a visit, if only to realize that Sudbury’s food scene has more depth and breadth than most residents ever fully realize.
One thing is certain: you don’t have to drive far to find a wide variety of burger styles and dining experiences.
