Sudbury voters approved two ballot questions for school roofs on Tuesday, December 16.
The Special Town Election was called for two debt exclusions that will fund replacement and repair of roofs at the Josiah Haynes and General John Nixon elementary schools. A Special Town Meeting voting earlier in the month also approved the projects.
Turnout was decidedly low — with just 891 voters casting ballots — but the results were overwhelmingly in favor of the projects. The unofficial results from the Town Clerk show 626 in favor and 264 opposed on the Haynes roof ballot question. Meanwhile, the Nixon roof received 630 votes in favor and 261 opposed. There was one “blank” for the Haynes roof.

Precinct 2 had the highest turnout with 188 voters casting ballots. Precinct 6 had the lowest with 121. All election day voting occurred at the Fairbank Community Center. The total turnout represented 6.1% of Sudbury’s registered voters according to the Town Clerk’s website.
The vote secures nearly $5M in reimbursements from the Massachusetts School Building Authority. That’s approximately 41% of the total cost of the projects, which were estimated at nearly $12M. The projects will soon go out to bid, which will give the Town a firmer understanding of the price for the projects. Work is expected to be completed in the summer of 2026, assuming all goes according to plan.
