The American Camp Association (ACA) has announced that Scott Brody, operator of Sudbury’s Camp Sewataro, is the 2026 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award — the highest honor bestowed by the national organization.
The award, which recognizes a lifetime of leadership and service to the camp industry and the ACA, was officially announced by the ACA on February 2. Brody will be formally recognized later this month at the ACA National Conference in San Diego.
For Sudbury residents, Brody is recognized as the operator of Camp Sewataro, which runs on the Liberty Ledge property on Haynes Road. The town purchased the property in 2019 and licensed the camp operation and land management responsibilities to Brody.
Brody has spent decades as a central figure in the national camp movement, advocating for the developmental power of the “unplugged” summer experience. In addition to managing Sudbury’s Camp Sewataro, he is the owner of Everwood Day Camp in Sharon.
As the National Board Chair of the ACA during the Covid-19 pandemic, Brody led the effort to create the “Field Guide for Camps,” a set of CDC-supported safety protocols that allowed thousands of camps to reopen.
The news of Brody’s award has resonated throughout the camp community. In a recent tribute titled “The Quiet Power of Service,” writer Lizabeth Fogel said of Brody “Scott has dedicated his life to the power of camp, helping children grow into confident, capable, and connected adults.”
