As a Sudbury parent, I’m asking neighbors to vote no on Article 4 at the May 20 Special Town Meeting. This school committee has earned my support by focusing on the topics I believe are critical to our school system and community – support for all kinds of students and parents, improved school facilities, respectful teacher negotiations, meaningful goals for leadership and strong budget management. The no confidence petition has been unable to deliver proof of any wrongdoing by this committee, and no violations have been cited or substantiated by any state authorities. As a community, it’s important that we continue to be guided by facts rather than opinions about our elected officials and the work that they are doing.
Aside from the particular circumstances surrounding the no confidence vote, the suggested recall provision also presents a very real democratic concern to me as a citizen. Not accepting election results, or making election decisions based on supposed voter intent instead of what is filled out on the ballot, is a dangerous and slippery slope. It is exactly these types of behaviors that at a minimum blur the lines about what constitutes a fair election and at the worst allow for real election fraud to take place. Let’s make sure Sudbury continues to be a beacon of true democracy by honoring the results of each and every election, working within instead of against existing guidelines to deliver change.
