I’m a Sudbury parent and I’ll be voting no to Articles 3 and 4 at the May 20th Special Town Meeting.
I support our school committee, which continues to do great work to support our students’ academic success and wellbeing while remaining fiscally responsible in a pressured budgetary environment. As a family that utilizes Sudbury Extended Day, we appreciate the robust RFP process the School Committee completed this year. Our daughter loves SED, and I’m thrilled that she will get to continue to thrive in the program for years to come. As a community member, I also appreciate that the RFP process ensured we are receiving the greatest possible value for the cost of care, and I value the diligence and accountability shown by the School Committee in conducting a thorough review process prior to awarding the contract extension.
I feel it also must be noted that Articles 3 and 4 attempt to subvert the votes of the Sudbury residents who elected the current committee members. Article 3 cites accountability as one of its goals, but outlines no process to investigate and substantiate allegations of poor performance or misconduct, and lacks important guardrails that other towns with recall provisions have in place. Similarly, Article 4 alleges school committee misconduct, but the accusations lack evidence and have not been substantiated through any formal process. Accountability is critical, and we should absolutely expect that of our elected officials, but the reality is that these Articles would provide a small group with a path to overturn the results of an election without appropriate guardrails if they are unhappy with the outcome.
Please join me in voting no to Articles 3 and 4.
