Sudbury Public Schools announced today that Dr. Carol Cavanaugh will join the district as Interim Assistant Superintendent beginning July 1, 2026, filling a key leadership role as the district navigates a transitional year at the top of its administration.
The announcement was made by Annette Doyle, the district’s current Assistant Superintendent, who will herself step into the role of Interim Superintendent for the 2026-2027 school year, also effective July 1.
Dr. Cavanaugh brings decades of experience in Massachusetts public education to the position. She most recently served as Superintendent of Hopkinton Public Schools before retiring in June 2025. Prior to leading the Hopkinton district, she served as its Assistant Superintendent and held a range of building and district-level leadership positions throughout her career.
“Throughout the interview process, she demonstrated a future-focused perspective on student learning and a deep understanding of curriculum and instruction,” Doyle wrote in a message to staff and families. Doyle added that Dr. Cavanaugh spoke of “her unwavering commitment to the success and well-being of students, staff, and families,” and expressed confidence that the incoming administrator would “hit the ground running.”
Dr. Cavanaugh earned her PhD in Educational Studies from Lesley University and holds a Master of Arts in Teaching from Boston University.
The leadership changes come as the Sudbury School Committee prepares to launch a search for a permanent Superintendent in the coming months. According to Doyle, the Committee plans to share more details about the search process this fall.
In welcoming Dr. Cavanaugh to the district, Doyle expressed confidence that her expertise and “fresh perspective” would help Sudbury Public Schools “remain focused on our commitment to educational excellence” during the year ahead.
