Born in Ware, MA to Thomas Andrew and Irene Beach Mitchell, Paul grew up in Hardwick MA and served in the US Navy during WWII. He attended St. Michael’s College for his Undergraduate Degree, and University of Chicago for his Masters Degree. Paul taught history at Lincoln Sudbury High School, specializing in all things Russian, from 1958 to1990, was head of the history department and established a Russian History Book Section at the library.
He is predeceased by his brother Thomas P. Mitchell and his sister Mary Mitchell Thompson. He leaves behind three nephews: Michael, Mark and John Thompson.
Paul was passionate about teaching, Russian history, literature, Icon Art, cats, classical music, choral voices and his Corvette. He loved to flip his tie over his shoulder and disrupt the norm. He had a far-reaching impact upon all the people he touched and was an optimist who invariably bid farewell with “SHINE ON”.
