Sudbury convened a public input session on June 24 regarding the future of Camp Sewataro, and the message from residents, both in the room and joining remotely, was overwhelming: keep the beloved summer camp running. But the conversation didn’t stop there. Attendees floated a host of ideas for making fuller use of the property year-round, from splash pads and ice rinks to corporate retreats, after-school care, and teen programs designed to pull kids away from their screens.
It’s not difficult to summarize what transpired. Keep the camp, add some uses around it, and make a big push to residents to ensure the land and infrastructure are well-utilized.
Rather than cover the evening in the usual fashion, Sudbury Weekly has elected to report the proceedings the only way that truly does municipal planning justice: in verse. What follows is the people’s input during the meeting, rendered in (mediocre) limerick.
In Sudbury one evening they met,
On the fate of Camp Sewataro to bet
Both in person and screen,
The clear theme was keen:
“Keep the summer camp running, don’t fret!”
But the townsfolk had more on their mind,
Like the bookings too few seem to find
Those free spaces to rent
And a corporate event
Could bring revenue, neatly aligned!
Add a splash pad to cool off the heat,
Afterschool care to keep the day sweet,
Give the teens something fun
(Not their phones!) when school’s done,
So those long winter months feel complete.
Build a rink where the skaters can glow,
Year-round programming, row upon row
From the camp’s summer cheer
To activities all year,
Let Sewataro have room still to grow!
