Sudbury’s Park and Recreation Department is unveiling their fall program offerings this week. While longtime favorites will continue, the department told the Park and Recreation Commission on August 17 that they added three programs located at the Liberty Ledge/Camp Sewataro property.
The programs include an “Intro to Fishing Clinic,” “Puddlestompers,” and “Nature Explorers.”
The “Puddlestompers” program is targeted towards pre-school students ages three to five. The program listing states “Weekly classes include hands-on nature exploration, active movement and play, snack and a story.”
The “Intro to Fishing Clinic” is for kids ages four through ten, noting it is “A highly specialized, environmentally conscious outdoor laboratory teaching safe, hands-on fishing fundamentals. Participants interact directly with nature while mastering water safety rules.”
The “Nature Explorers” program serves children ages six through eleven, noting “Nature Explorers turns the outdoors into a science adventure as scientists learn about plants, animals, weather, and ecosystems. Kids participate in hands-on experiments, nature walks, scavenger hunts, and simple observation challenges.”
The fishing and nature explorers programs are $130 for residents, while Puddlestompers runs $265 for the younger cohort. The fall programs start in September and conclude in November.
The launch of these programs is part of the release of the Fall brochure from Sudbury’s Park and Recreation department. That department has seen turnover in leadership over the last year, and was consolidated under a new “Health and Community Services” department led by former Sudbury Health Director Vivian Zeng. The Health Department still reports into Zeng as the lead of the combined department.
Zeng has made it clear to the Park and Recreation Commission and to the Liberty Ledge/Camp Sewataro Advisory Committee that her department wants to offer new and expanded programming tailored to local needs… including at the Liberty Ledge/Sewataro property. The three program additions at Sewataro are responsive to community feedback over the summer in which residents called for preserving the summer camp and adding additional programming throughout the year.
Park and Recreation isn’t the only group looking to make use of the property. L-S Adult and Community Education is also offering a Family Fishing Clinic at Liberty Ledge/Camp Sewataro on September 22. (Page 8 below)
