On January 31, 2025 the Sudbury Park and Recreation Department issued an update on Facebook regarding the status of the Atkinson Pool. The pool remains closed, but a UV filtration system arrived earlier than expected, and installation is already underway. The new system is part of a proposed solution to manage the chloramine levels in the pool. Conventional approaches have failed to address the issue according to prior announcements.
While the department was encouraged that things were coming along faster than expected, the announcement did not set a reopening date. Instead, they promised another update by the end of this week.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – ATKINSON POOL UPDATE
Date: January 31, 2025
The Park & Recreation Atkinson Pool is pleased to share an update on the ongoing efforts to reopen the Atkinson Pool. We are making significant progress, and we appreciate the patience of our community as we work to ensure a safe and high-quality swimming environment.
Current Status
We have received the new UV filtration system earlier than anticipated, and installation is currently underway. This is a critical step in addressing the elevated chloramine levels that led to the Atkinson pool temporary closure.
Next Steps in the Reopening Process
Electrical Hookups: Once the UV system is installed, the next phase will involve electrical connections to integrate the system into our Atkinson Pool power grid operations.
System Calibration & Testing: After the electrical work is complete, the UV system will be turned on and calibrated. This process is expected to take approximately 48-72 hours to effectively reduce chlorine levels in the water and calibration.
Board of Health Inspection: If water quality improves as expected, the Town of Sudbury Board of Health will conduct a final inspection to verify that chemicals & chloramine levels in both the dive well and lap pool meet health and safety code standards.
Reopening Plan: Once we receive clearance from the Board of Health, we will finalize a reopening timeline and communicate next steps to the public.
Looking Ahead: While we do not yet have a firm reopening date, we are encouraged by the progress made and will provide another update by the end of next week.
What This Means for Pool Memberships:
As previously announced, all memberships remain suspended or canceled while we work toward reopening. Once we have a confirmed reopening date, members will have the opportunity to sign up online or in person at the Atkinson Pool office.
We appreciate your patience and support as we move forward in this process. Please stay tuned for further announcements via our website, email notifications.
