On Election Day Tuesday, Nov. 3, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. All six Sudbury precincts vote at the Fairbank Community Center, 40 Fairbank Rd., on Election Day.
Election officials urge voters to consider voting by mail or by in-person early voting to avoid possible delays on Election Day as voters read through the lengthy ballot.
Lisa Davis, Town Clerk, noted that two cards, each 18 inches long, make up this year’s ballot, to accommodate the nine statewide ballot questions plus a question 10 on the Sudbury ballot. Both cards need to be turned in during early voting or returned if voting by mail. A specimen ballot for the election will be posted on the clerk’s website.
The Town Clerk’s office has sent mail ballots to voters who have requested them. The deadline to request a mail ballot is Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 5 p.m. Voters can apply for a mail ballot at the Town Clerk’s office in Town Hall, 322 Concord Rd., or online at www.VoteInMA.com. Voters can track the status of their mail ballot at www.VoteInMA.com.
Mail ballots cannot be returned to polling places. Mail ballots can be returned to the dropbox behind Town Hall, available 24/7, or to the clerk’s office; the deadline to use the dropbox or deliver in person is 8 p.m. on Election Day. Ballots can also be returned by U.S. mail. Ballots mailed in the U.S. must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received by Nov. 6. Ballots mailed from outside the U.S. must be postmarked by Nov. 3 and received by Nov. 13.
The last day to register to vote in the Nov. 3 election is 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. You can register at the Town Clerk’s office or online at www.VoteInMA.com. You can also use that website to check your registration status or update your registration information.
Additional information is available on the Town Clerk’s website.
Information on the nine statewide ballot questions is in the red Information for Voters booklet sent to every household by the Secretary of State. That booklet lists each ballot question, explains what yes and no votes mean, and lists pro and con arguments for each question. That information is also available in an accessible digital format on the Secretary’s website and in the League of Women Voters online voter’s guide, www.vote411.org. The “red book” includes a page at the very end to list your choices and take to the polls as a reminder.
Question 10 on the Sudbury ballot is a non-binding referendum placed on the ballots in eight state representative districts, including the 13th Middlesex district.
This question asks voters: “Shall the Representative from this District be instructed to vote in favor of legislation or rules to reduce the House Speaker’s and Senate President’s control over state legislators’ stipends (extra pay) and to provide stipends only to legislators who do significant extra work that is transparent and accountable to the public?”
