Local talent will take center stage next month as Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School (L-S) hosts “Emerging Voices: An Evening of Short Films.” The community screening event, scheduled for Thursday, May 7, will highlight the work of the next generation of MetroWest filmmakers, including a highly anticipated documentary created by three L-S seniors.
Curated from a wide pool of regional submissions, the showcase will feature 10 short films produced by high school students, representing a diverse array of voices, genres, and perspectives.
Among the standout features is Bridges and Walls, a new documentary created by L-S seniors John Williams, Tesu Hamm, and PJ Gammons. The film follows the three teenagers as they travel to the U.S.–Mexico border in South Texas. Through their journey, the students explore the complexities of immigration and border policy firsthand, resulting in a timely and thoughtful examination of a deeply complex national issue.
The evening is co-produced by Third Act Productions, a MetroWest-based, women-led filmmaking company founded by Karin Trachtenberg, Liz Bishop, and Sudbury resident Julia Trueblood.
“This event is about giving young filmmakers the opportunity to explore meaningful stories and share them with their community,” Trueblood said of the upcoming showcase. “We’re especially proud to support projects like Bridges and Walls that engage with important, real-world issues.”
In addition to the student films, the program will feature screenings of Third Act Productions’ own award-winning short films, Three A.M. and Pumpkin Pie, along with a special sneak peek of their newest project, EXIT.
Following the screenings, attendees will be invited to stay for a live Q&A session with the student filmmakers. The organizers hope this will offer the audience a unique opportunity to hear directly from the emerging artists about their creative processes and the stories behind their cinematic work.
A major highlight of the night will be the presentation of the Emerging Voices Award, which recognizes outstanding achievement in student filmmaking. The award is presented by COHO Studios of Shrewsbury.
Both Bridges and Walls and the Emerging Voices event have received local backing, including funding from the Sudbury Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Mass Cultural Council. The event is also made possible by generous support from Sudbury-based business 20West Legal, Middlesex Savings Bank, and grants from the Cultural Councils of Southborough, Lincoln, Concord, and Carlisle.
