The Town of Lincoln held its Annual Town Meeting on Saturday, March 28. Article 33 called for an update to the regional agreement that governs Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School (L-S). The article passed unanimously according to results posted by Lincoln Town Clerk, Valerie Fox. The agreement needs to be passed by Sudbury’s Annual Town Meeting next, then the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. (DESE)
The L-S School Committee has been working through largely “non-substantive” changes that will bring the agreement into compliance with current laws and regulations, with a focus on newer requirements from DESE that came after the agreement was last updated decades ago.
During the March 24 meeting of the L-S School Committee, Chair Ravi Simon told the committee about a communication from DESE: “They are in a position, assuming nothing crazy happens at Town Meeting and stuff gets changed, to say that if we get the regional agreement approved by both Town Meetings then they will recommend the commissioner sign and approve the update to the regional agreement.” (2:15:40 below)
Superintendent Andrew Stephens added “It was terrific news today.”
Member Jack Ryan reminded the committee that any change on the floor of either Town Meeting would result in “the entire process ending and having to be redone.”
Member Maura Carty applauded the work of Simon and Stephens, and several others involved, and reiterated the collaborative nature of the process.
The approval by Lincoln Town Meeting puts the focus on Sudbury’s Annual Town Meeting, which starts on Monday, May 4. For further reading on the changes to the agreement, read this story.
