The League of Women Voters of Sudbury will present a public forum on PFAS chemicals, described as “forever chemicals,” and their impact on Sudbury Monday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m.
The forum, “Should I Be Worried? PFAS in Sudbury,” will be a remote-only event. Click here to register. All members of the public are invited.
Keynote speaker will be Vincent J. Roy, executive director of the Sudbury Water District, to discuss the levels of PFAS chemicals in Sudbury water, what the district is doing about it, and what impact PFAS could have on residents.
Additional speakers are Deirdre Cummings, legislative director of MASSPIRG, and Carolyn Lee, legislative specialist for natural resources for the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts. They will explain what PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances) chemicals are, why they are a serious problem, and legislation pending on Beacon Hill to ban products containing PFAS chemicals from Massachusetts.
PFAS chemicals are used in a wide range of consumer products, from lipstick to raincoats to non-stick cookware, and they have leached into the water supply. The Sudbury Water District reports it has detected PFAS in the water at concentrations “relatively close” to the state’s maximum concentration limit.
