On Monday, March 17, the Sudbury Select Board and the Sudbury Public Schools (SPS) School Committee interviewed 5 applicants for appointment to a vacant seat on the SPS School Committee. They ultimately voted to appoint Jessica McCready to fill the vacancy. The vacancy was the result of school committee member Mary Stephens resigning earlier this year.
McCready is also running uncontested for a three-year seat on the SPS School Committee, and the Town Election is March 31. Winners in the election are sworn in after Annual Town Meeting in May. The motion for the vote specified that the appointment would last until the election winners were sworn into office.
The vote was 8-1 in favor of appointing McCready. The lone “no” vote was from SPS School Committee vice chair Meredith Gerson. Gerson voiced support for appointing Richard Tinsley to the seat—a former member of the school committee that Gerson beat overwhelmingly in 2019 as a challenger to the then-incumbent Tinsley.
There were five candidates for appointment including all three candidates running in the Town Election for SPS seats. Betsy Sues and Allison Vanderels are running in a contested race for the remainder of Mary Stephens’ term. Kay Bell, who currently serves on the Permanent Building Committee, had pulled papers to run for SPS, but withdrew earlier this year.
