On Wednesday, September 24, the Sudbury Permanent Building Committee reorganized, appointing member Jennifer Pincus as co-chair with existing co-chair Craig Blake. Elaine Jones stepped down from the co-chair position but will continue to serve as she approaches four decades on the Permanent Building Committee.
Committee members were enthusiastic in expressing their gratitude for the long-term service rendered by Jones as both a member of the committee and a Town of Sudbury employee.
The feel-good meeting also included expressions of gratitude towards Jennifer Pincus, who announced that the Fairbank Community Center project was officially completed. Pincus served as the point-person on the project from the beginning.
Pincus told the committee that a project designed to suppress bathroom noises from overflowing into other areas of the new building was successful, and that other warranty-related and last-mile items would be crossed off the list in the months to come.
Co-chair Craig Blake informed the committee that the Fire Station #2 project was more or less completed, with final invoicing and close-out activities being imminent.
The committee went on to discuss the roof projects for the General John Nixon and Josiah Haynes elementary schools. Those projects are going through a Massachusetts School Building Authority process, which members expected would limit their involvement moving forward.
Member Elaine Jones informed the committee that the invoices for the general contractor came in on target at about $27.5 million, and change orders amounted to roughly $2 million. Additional funds were appropriated for the project over the years, but weren’t expended through the general contractor.

Co-chair Pincus pointed out that the final community center project came in significantly below the budget proposed for a earlier concept for the community center that Sudbury residents rejected prior to the pandemic. Notably, the project outperformed many municipal projects completed during a period of high inflation, supply chain disruption, and cost escalation.
