On Monday the SPS School Committee voted to approve a contract extension with Superintendent Brad Crozier. There was no deliberation on the contract itself, as that’s done in executive session, but members noted their appreciation for the commitment of the Superintendent to Sudbury Public Schools, voiced affirmation of his leadership of the district, and exchanged compliments about the working relationship between the SPS School Committee and Superintendent Crozier. The new contract extends the agreement for five years and bumps the Superintendent’s salary to $220,000 in the current fiscal year. At the end of the new term the salary would reach $238,000. The contracted embedded the rationale of the committee into the contract language itself:
“The Committee recognizes the value of stability in the position of superintendent, that superintendents are often recruited to work in other districts when their compensation has not kept pace with the market range for the position, and that there is a significant monetary cost, expenditure of time, and disruption to the District associated with replacing a superintendent. Therefore, after review of the market range for superintendents, the Committee has determined that it is in the best interest of the Sudbury Public Schools to make a one-time market adjustment in compensation for Contract Year 2024-2025.”

Vice-Chair Gerson specifically mentioned that the job market for Superintendents has featured an abundance of openings recently, and reiterated appreciation for Crozier’s commitment to SPS. (1:51:00) The meeting packet also included research on superintendent salaries in surrounding communities. According to that research, the SPS salary was lagging far behind surrounding districts.

Crozier’s tenure in Sudbury includes navigating the district through the Covid-19 pandemic and a sudden shift to remote and then hybrid learning. He also oversaw the return to in-person learning, ongoing recovery efforts, and this year the district was successful in its pursuit of an override.
