Sudbury residents headed to the polls at the Fairbank Community Center on September 1, 2026, to cast their ballots in the State primary election. According to the unofficial results, 3,837 votes were cast across all six precincts, representing a 26.4% turnout of the town’s 14,542 registered voters. Democratic voters made up the bulk of the turnout, casting 3,257 ballots, while 580 Republican ballots were recorded.
In the highly anticipated Democratic race for Senator in Congress, Edward J. Markey defeated challenger Seth Moulton among Sudbury voters, capturing 1,865 votes to Moulton’s 1,377. On the Republican side for the same seat, John Deaton ran unopposed and secured 466 votes.
The results in the Markey/Moulton race were interesting. Markey won by a smaller margin in Sudbury than he did state-wide. That appears to have been driven, in part, by Moulton’s stronger performance in Precinct 1 where he was just 11 votes short of Markey’s total. Moulton ran significantly further behind Markey in all other precincts. Precinct 1 covers the northwest corner of Sudbury.
For the Governor’s race, Democrat Maura Healey ran unopposed in the primary, earning a resounding 2,836 votes. In the contested Republican gubernatorial primary, Michael Roger Minogue defeated Brian Shortsleeve in Sudbury, walking away with 402 votes compared to Shortsleeve’s 167.
Sudbury voters also weighed in on key district and local races:
- Representative in Congress – Fifth District (Democrat): Incumbent Katherine M. Clark won Sudbury with 2,539 votes, easily outpacing challengers Jonathan Paz, who received 443 votes, and Tarik Samman, who received 139 votes.
- District Attorney – Northern District (Democrat): Marian T. Ryan held a strong lead over David Marc Solet, taking 2,300 votes compared to Solet’s 574.
- Councillor – Third District (Democrat): Mara Dolan secured 2,181 votes, defeating Margie Palladino, who received 529 votes.
- Representative in General Court – Thirteenth Middlesex District (Democrat): Local Sudbury candidate Ravi Simon ran unopposed on the Democratic ticket, receiving 2,686 votes.
- Senator in General Court – Middlesex & Worcester District: Democratic incumbent James Bradley Eldridge ran unopposed and captured 2,655 votes, while Joseph Timothy Shea took 382 votes on the Republican ticket.
Other notable Democratic incumbents running unopposed in the primary included Lieutenant Governor Kimberley Driscoll with 2,714 votes, Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell with 2,682 votes, Secretary of State William Francis Galvin with 2,766 votes, Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg with 2,642 votes, and Auditor Diana DiZoglio with 2,566 votes.
Republican uncontested primary winners included Shawn Oliver for Lieutenant Governor with 410 votes, Michael C. Walsh for Attorney General with 448 votes, and Elizabeth Dionne for Treasurer with 447 votes.
