A community tradition is back this Halloween, drawing families from Sudbury and the surrounding region for a barrier-free night of spooky fun.
Now in its fourth year, Sudbury’s Accessible Trick-or-Treat will take place on Saturday, October 31, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. along Meadowbrook Circle and Meadowbrook Road. What began in 2023 has blossomed into a popular regional event. Hosted by Meadowbrook neighbors in collaboration with the Sudbury Commission on Disability, community volunteers, and local sponsors, the event ensures that children of all abilities can experience the magic of Halloween alongside their siblings and friends.

Organizers prioritize inclusion in multiple ways. “Halloween is such a simple childhood tradition, but it isn’t simple for every family,” said Karyn Jones, Chair of the Sudbury Commission on Disability. “For some children, getting to the front door, seeing where they are going, managing the sensory environment or finding a treat they can safely enjoy can be a barrier to participating. The idea behind this event is that we can remove some of those barriers without taking away what makes Halloween fun. Everyone is invited, everyone trick-or-treats together, and children get to share that experience with their siblings, friends and neighbors. To me, that is what inclusion should look like.”
To create a truly inclusive experience, participating residents bring treat stations to the ends of their driveways, eliminating the need to navigate stairs or long walkways. Stations offer both allergy-conscious candy and non-food items like toys and stickers. The neighborhood also maintains a sensory-conscious environment free of strobe lights, sudden noises, and pets. There is no age limit, and trick-or-treaters aren’t required to say “trick or treat” to receive their haul.
