Carole Ann Baer, the longtime commissioner of Sudbury’s Challenger League, will be honored at Fenway Park next month for more than two decades of dedication to inclusive baseball.
Baer has been named the 18th recipient of DK Baseball Clinics’ Legacy Edition Tribute Bat, a national award recognizing leaders who have transformed lives through the game. She founded the Sudbury Challenger League over 20 years ago to give children and young adults with disabilities the chance to play baseball, build friendships, and be part of a team.
“It’s more than just baseball,” Baer said. “It’s movement, confidence, and friendship. Parents tell me their kids look forward to every game. That means everything.”
Under her leadership, the league has become a fixture in the Sudbury community, supported by Sudbury Little League and enriched through partnerships with the Boston Red Sox. Families say the program has given their children lasting confidence and joy.
“Carole Ann has kept this league going for 20 years despite personal challenges,” said Tim McCullough, a Sudbury parent whose son plays in the league. “She deserves recognition for the joy she’s brought to so many.”
The Legacy Edition Tribute Bat will be presented to Baer on September 17 at Fenway Park during a special ceremony celebrating her contributions and the lasting impact of the Sudbury Challenger League.
