Sudbury is draped in history dating back hundreds of years. But have you ever wondered what was happening in Sudbury 10, 20 or 30 years ago? In this new series, we pull some of the highlights from available public records to create a snapshot of the month over the course of three decades.

The Town Manager’s newsletter from August 2016 highlights a design charrette for the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail. In the same newsletter, the Select Board update notes early discussions about the Eversource transmission line project that now runs beneath the Mass Central Rail Trail. You’ll also find a note about the beginnings of the Community Electricity Aggregation program that is still in operation today. Newsletter below.

The Town Manager’s newsletter announced a new “Code of Conduct for Town of Sudbury Committees
Whose Members are appointed by the Sudbury Board of Selectmen or the Sudbury Town Manager.” They also announced an email communications policy. But the month appeared to be a rather quiet summer month in Sudbury, with most updates pertaining to staff. The Town Crier documented the Wayland-Sudbury joint septage facility that never came to be… leaving Route 20 limited by septic constraints to this day.
August 1996
The Town Crier covered abutter concerns regarding development on Meachen Road, Hunters Run and Hampshire Street. The Sudbury TAB covered concerns about the accessibility of Sudbury’s Town buildings, including a dustup with a member of the State’s Commission on Disability who couldn’t access the Flynn Building for a meeting. For a trip down memory lane, the Crier ran a story covering a proposed change to the telephone area codes.
1996 was a significant year in Sudbury — the Annual Report notes that the Town had transitioned to a Town Manager form of government. “For Sudbury, the year 1996 has brought with it one of the most significant changes in its 357-year history. In March, the Town Manager form of government was formally introduced with the hiring of the Town’s first manager, Mr. Steven L. Ledoux. Mr. Ledoux brings to the Town both his professionalism and experience that he gained as the Town Manager in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The Board of Selectmen is pleased to report that the transition has gone smoothly.” Full report below.
