At the Monday, August 5 meeting of the Sudbury Public Schools School Committee, the committee voted to accept a gift from the Curtis Parent Organization (CPO) for the installation of a nine-hole disc golf course. You can view the course layout on a Google map here.
According to the meeting packet, the gift is valued at $1,409.98 and has already been approved by the CPO Executive organization. (Page 16) The funds will cover the baskets, tee markers and discs.
During the school committee discussion, Member Karyn Jones asked about the accessibility of the course for people with disabilities, noting that disc golf can be a very inclusive game for people with a variety of disabilities. Superintendent Crozier responded that four of the nine holes would be accessible, but could not specify which holes.
The meeting packet indicates that two of the accessible holes are in the recess area and the other two are in the physical education class areas on the property. Member Jones questioned if students with certain disabilities would just have to stop playing when they reached inaccessible holes. She added that she felt the built environment teaches students lessons about the world around them, making it important to design for equity and inclusion.
Member Mandy Sim stated that her vote in support of accepting the gift was contingent upon ensuring four holes were accessible. Other members seemed comfortable with that. No additional information about the location or order of the accessible holes came up in the meeting. Superintendent Crozier committed to providing additional information after the meeting and vote, and the committee proceeded with a 4-1 vote to accept the donation.
