During its Monday meeting, the Sudbury Park and Recreation Commission voted to send a formal letter to the Liberty Ledge/Sewataro Advisory Committee (LLSAC), advocating for increased public recreation programming at the Liberty Ledge property.
The commission’s letter frames the site as a valuable asset that could significantly benefit the broader community, emphasizing that expanded Town access could work in tandem with existing summer camp operations rather than competing with them.
In the drafted letter, the commission outlined several key reasons for expanding the Park and Recreation Department’s use of the property. “The Park and Recreation Commission sees unique value in the Liberty Ledge property for the Town of Sudbury to access recreation opportunities,” the letter stated, adding that the site “unlocks new programming possibilities.”
Commissioners provided feedback on the letter during their meeting, and the commission provided a copy of the final letter upon request today. It’s embedded below.
The core of the commission’s message is a show of full support for the Park and Recreation Department’s efforts to establish formal, consistent programming at the site. The department has already introduced three new programs on the property for this fall, but the commission is calling on Town leadership to take concrete administrative action to ensure ongoing access for Park and Recreation programming.
The letter signals growing momentum to integrate Liberty Ledge more deeply into Sudbury’s public parks network, placing the ball in the Select Board and LLSAC’s court for the next steps in property use discussions.
Commissioners shared different perspectives on other potential uses of the property, such as affordable housing during their meeting. The original draft voiced opposition to any “non-recreation development of the property” that could impede future recreational programming. They ultimately opted to to rephrase that in an effort to stay within their purview of recreation. Jump to 44:23 below for the discussion.
